My family used to call me the little book eater. I’ve loved to read ever since I could… well read.
Here are some of my faves…
The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver – Spoke to my soul – this book changed me forever
The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger – My two favorite things – a love story+supernatural
The Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer – Ditto to above
Child of my Heart by Alice McDermott – makes me miss my childhood babysitter Amy
She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb – one of the most disturbing books I ever read – but a necessary read
The Virgin Suicides by Eugenides Jeffrey – A greek chorus of adolescent boys in 1970’s Michigan tell the story leading up to five sisters’ suicides. You long to be one of the Lisbon girls – until they well, kill themselves.
Midwives by Chris Bohjalian – my intro book to Bohjalian, Transistor Radio is my 2nd favorite
Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier – Beautiful as the painting, makes you see golden light and soft blues for hours after reading
The Hours by Michael Cunningham – Meryl Streep did it justice – but nothing is better than this book.
Jemima Jones by Jane Green (SUCH a chick book, but has all those Cinderella elements that sucker you in)
“She’s Come Undone” by Wally Lamb. Liked that one, too.
Mine are:
most recently, Traveling Mercies by Anne LaMott (I like the way she talks to the reader…interesting woman…it was recommended to me by my Asst. Minister counselor…free counseling! He’s cool…and the book is not your scary religious kind of deal)
The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (This was one of my favorites as a kid…loved it that she ran away from home, got to live in a museum, managed her money well and had an awesome mystery to solve. And some adults treated her like she was older.)
When Jesus Came to My House. It was the one book I remember mom reading to me. The little boys are so sweet. Simple, lovely drawings.
All the Judy Blume books. I was the only one in my class allowed to read books from the upper grade stacks in the DR Elem. library!
Carl Hiaasen books. Laugh out loud hysterical. He portrays the wacky state of Florida and its inhabitants/characters so well…and he always does the assholes in by the very nature they violated. Take that, scumbags! I met Carl Hiassen in Key West…he was getting some kind of award for his pro-environment news columns. He’s sexy as hell. Those eyes! I was working as a bartender at the hotel where he was the keynote speaker…The Pier House.
I used to like the MV mystery books…what’s his name? Phillip Craig, that’s it! I liked it when he said “Delish!” His books always made me hungry for seafood. But then the story line got too repetitive. Just more of the same. But I always wanted to step into his life and live in his house…and ride around the island….I’d read his stories when I lived in Boston, wishing I was out of the city and on the island (the last year I was living in Boston…I was ready to get out of the city!)
