Sean and I spoke of our first and only ill-fated date last night. He had asked me to go roller skating in Old Saybrook. We remembered there was little choice for couple entertainment in those days, especially for 12 year olds. It was either wait a month for the next appropriate movie release, or deal with the choice of smelly footwear either at the bowling alley or roller rink. He chose what he was good at, but he recalls he would have gone anywhere. He only wanted to be with me.

He was an adept roller, able to go backwards and make that hairpin left turn at every rounded corner of the rink. I was woefully struggling in the small practice rink off in a darkly-lit corner. We had played together for many years, but this was our first official date, since it was not in my little red house, my bedroom, his basement or in the woods on our favorite path, not during junior choir or upstairs in his house, listening to a recording of Pope's a Telltale Heart or over a bunsen burner experiment on his dining room table.

We were both very nervous, and acted so differently with each than we ever had before. Sean felt awkward that I felt awkward. I was quiet and he was quiet. If he had had the wherewithall, Sean commented, he would have just grabbed my hand and pulled me over to a quiet corner and talked with me until the music stopped. Unfortunately, he was stymied and I was waiting for his lead. Sean didn't want to ruin our friendship. Neither did I. The afternoon ended in emerging from a dark hole into the blinding sun, an uncomfortable ride in his mother's station wagon and then eyes down-glanced, whispered good byes.

This date followed shortly after our first kiss and the wintergreen lifesaver closet incident. I grabbed him in (your former bedroom closet, too, I might add), and proceeded to share the marvel of sparks shooting from between my molars. Sean remembers wanting to stay in that closet with me forever. I wanted to too, but lord, what would I do with him? Even on our first kiss, I tweaked his nose a couple of times before finally giving the poor guy a kiss among the rubble of the Benjamin Handy Blacksmith shop foundation.

The woeful date was followed not long thereafter by a doomed meeting in the John Winthrop Junior High School gym. Sean's usual group of friends were glaringly absent that evening during the student council's sponsored dance. His mom, as usual, was the town constable on duty. Damn.

I refused Sean's proposal for a dance. After all, he had abandonned me in the kiddie roller pool. Sean's mom saw her son was not dancing and convinced sweet Holly Hallden to ask him to dance. The following day, Sean received a note from Holly, very nicely making it clear that they were not an item, despite the dance during a couple's song. Sean replied, "No problem."

Neither of us went back to a John Winthrop dance for the rest of the school year, and then Sean moved that summer.

You took me right back to the playground -- it happened on every playground, I think. And we all took it so very seriously! I remember wondering if we were REALLY married, but deciding we weren't since it wasn't in church (which was an obvious requirement!). And keeping it secret from adults for some reason.... Thank you for reminding me!

WOW. What an incredibly inventive and well written post. I'm thinkin'... damn, I didn't know my sister was such a great writer. How often do you post on this blog? I think you told me that for my vintage jewelry blog, I should post at least every two weeks, right? I haven't gotten back to you on that...to learn how to use this wordpress.com web log. I did figure out how to change the masthead picture....I put in a picture of a bracelet...one of the most stunning and high end pieces I've sold. I think it looks pretty good. But then I haven't gone back to it. Can you still help me get it going? Maybe it's pretty easy to do? I just haven't had the patience lately to figure it out myself....like the patience I did have to figure out how to sell on Ebay and start a shop on Ruby Lane! Thanks, Robs

I had to go for a walk to walk off how p-ssed I was. In other words, I agree! But they said if you go to showtime.com starting tomorrow you will get some hints or something, not sure if you will find out who if anyone did it though. yeah, I wanted to scream. Sheesh.

That's funny - Who Shot JR was the first thing I thought of when I heard what they were doing with Jenny... although it was a little bit before my time, I remember my parents and my older siblings glued to the television :) Off to read your post now! Thanks for the comment...

Hey there! I actually did a post comparing this whole "who killed Jenny" thing to "who shot JR"! Just watched episode 1 of the 6th season. Weirdness abounds! Bette and Tina are still together... for now! ;)
